This elegant display comes directly from the Rear wing of the 2016 Renault RS16, the first season of Renault being back in F1 as a Constructor. The works team had a relatively successful first year back with their young and talented driver line-up of, former McLaren man, Kevin Magnusson and, rookie, Jolyon Palmer.
Believe it or not, this was not just designed to look at home on your wall, but this spectacular piece once formed a crucial part of the rear-wing, as the DRS flap on one of either of Magnusson or Palmer’s F1 car. The Drag Reduction System is designed to allow air to pass over the wing more efficiently than normal, to assist with overtaking.
The second coming of Renault came after buying out a declining Lotus F1 team. Despite a fantastic season for Grojean in the Lotus, the team was having some serious financial struggles and needed a near complete overhaul. So, whilst the 9th place in the Constructors Championship seems like a massive failure, what the result doesn’t tell you is all the preparation that went on for the 2017 season.
