The 2014 season marked the beginning of the Turbo-Hybrid era of Formula 1, and Mercedes were leaps and bounds ahead of the competition. If we cast our minds back, Hamilton moved from McLaren to Mercedes for the 2013 season, a decision that many fans and forecasters couldn’t quite understand. In the 2013 season Hamilton did take one win, and there were less questions about his move, but some still thought he’d be better off at McLaren. When the 2014 season rolled around, Hamilton’s decision-making process became obvious. Sir Lewis Hamilton won four out of the first five races, with his teammate - Rosberg - winning the other.
The three races that followed didn’t quite fall Hamilton’s way, although he still took 36 points. Round 9 was the British Grand Prix. With wet, windy and changeable conditions in qualifying, the circuit was very difficult to set a good lap. Rosberg got it right and set a lap good enough for pole, whilst Hamilton was down in sixth. Sunday came around and the home favourite had some work to do.
As the lights went out Hamilton was already zeroed in on his objectives. Half-way round the first lap, he had already made his way past Vettel and Hulkenberg to fourth place. A crash involving Massa and Raikkonen caused the red flag to come out. With the restart Hamilton was just as focused as he was before, his eyes locked onto the back of Magnusson’s McLaren. He chased him down and on Lap 3 Hamilton made the pass on the Danish driver. A solitary lap later the British driver, who was only a single World Champion at the time, caught his former British teammate and friend, Jenson Button who’s also a one-time World Champ, and overtook him. Lap three and Hamilton was already up to second position. Head down and focus, the British hero had to chase his teammate and overtake to take the win. It would appear that his focus did not let up once as Lewis Hamilton won the race by over 30 seconds with the fastest lap!
