George Russell 2024 Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team Qualifying Print – Canadian GP

After a trying start to the season, Mercedes are back to the top of F1 and this vast improvement was showcased in Qualifying of the Canadian GP.  

The British driver from King’s Lynn has been working hard with the team to turn the team around and he had a sensational session in qualifying at the Canadian GP. Having gone fastest in Q2, Russell certainly looked good for Q3. Russell went for an early run and set an incredibly fast 1:12.000 to take him to the top of the standings. 

Max Verstappen & Lando Norris, this season's championship protagonists, were still yet to set a lap time, would Russell be able to hold on to pole position? Lando Norris came round the final chicane to set a 1:12.021, not able to beat Russell and then all eyes were on the no.1 Red Bull. Verstappen set a final laptime of 1:12.000 - perfectly matching the time set by the no.63 Mercedes. As Russell’s time was set first, he got pole and Verstappen started alongside him.  

This is the second time that there has been a tie for pole over 3 decimal places – but you have to go all the way back to the 1997 Jerez GP for the last one.
