Oscar Piastri 2023 Print – David Johnson

Oscar Piastri, an Australian racing driver, came up through the ranks at an incredible rate. Having signed for the Alpine Junior team at the start of 2020, the Aussie went on to win the F3 Championship at the first time of asking. In 2021, having graduated to F2, Piastri took the championship by storm. He took his first race win in his first race weekend, and he went on to take five more over the rest of the season. Eleven podiums and six race wins absolutely plenty to secure Piastri the F2 championship, making him the only driver in recent history to win F3 and F2 in their rookie season.  

The Australian spent 2022 on the sidelines at Alpine as a test driver. Having caused massive controversy when he rejected Alpine, it was announced that Oscar would be taking over from Riccardo at McLaren for the 2023 season. Two junior titles in two seasons, being cornered into publicly embarrassing Alpine, and McLaren paying Ricciardo $21million to leave. No pressure kid. 

Oscar Piastri has stepped up to the plate beautifully. Perhaps the pressure was lifted slightly by how woeful the car was at the start of the season, but when upgrades came at the midpoint of the season Piastri did a superb job. With four podiums, including sprints, and a Sprint Race win, it was a great season for the young Australian. Winning top rookie and becoming the second highest-scoring rookie of all time makes it no surprise that he’s one of the most popular drivers in F1.
