Northampton, United KingdomStory
A rare piece of Grand Prix history, this front wing comes directly from Niki Lauda’s McLaren MP4/2, used at the season-opening Brazilian GP in 1984. Supplied with its original taped-on note, reading “Wing support tube cracked, do not use”, it is a fascinating example of race-used engineering from one of Formula 1®’s most dominant eras.
The Start of a Championship Season
The 1984 campaign marked the debut of the MP4/2, a car that would take Lauda to his third and final World Championship and secure McLaren the Constructors’ crown. Starting the year in Brazil, Lauda and teammate Alain Prost laid the foundations for one of the most successful cars in Formula 1® history. This front wing is a direct survivor from that opening race, connecting to the very beginning of McLaren’s turbocharged dominance.
Innovation in Carbon Fibre
The wing carries sponsorship from Hercules, an American aerospace company that became the first to supply carbon fibre to motorsport. Their partnership with McLaren sparked a revolution, giving the team the expertise and materials to master carbon fibre construction. This would soon become the cornerstone of McLaren’s design philosophy and a key factor in their dominance throughout the 1980s and beyond.
The Note
Adding to the uniqueness of this piece is the taped-on note left by the McLaren crew, warning “Wing support tube cracked, do not use”. This small detail provides a rare glimpse into the hands-on reality of F1® engineering and race-day decision-making, making the piece not only historically important but also rich with authenticity.
A Rare Opportunity
Front wings from the MP4/2 are seldom available, and one with this level of provenance is truly exceptional. Bearing both its race-used wear and its period-correct note, it offers collectors a tangible link to Niki Lauda, McLaren, and the dawn of a new era in F1® innovation.

Auction Buyers Guide
Our team's primary aims are to source the most unique items for our auctions and to make participating in our online events enjoyable and easy for our buyers. We endeavour to do this whilst offering a personalised service to all.
Step 1: Register to Bid
To register as a bidder, create an account on our account. You'll be asked to provide your credit card details, and a temporary charge will be placed on the account for the duration of the auction to minimise fraudulent accounts from interfering with the bidding process.
Step 2: Place Your Bid
Items at auction may be sold with or without a reserve price, and will be clearly identified as such during the auction.
For a sale to be successful a bid must equal or exceed the reserve. In the event that you are the highest final bidder, but the total bid remains under the reserve price the item will not sell.
Items that are sold without a reserve will be clearly identified as such during the auctions. In their case the highest final bid will always win the item.
Items that do not meet reserve or do not receive any bids will not sell. Upon the closure of the auction these will be removed and managed independently by our specialists. Interested parties are invited to engage with our private sales team to make an offer.
Step 3: Make Payment
We pride ourselves in offering our customers a variety of payment options to satisfy their preferences. Upon conclusion of the auction the F1® Authentics sales platform will automatically issue a payment link to the winning bidder.
Payment is due in full by the end of the first business day following a sale. Proof of payment will be required and requested by our specialists.
Auction hammer price is exclusive of buyer's premium and sales tax, and exclusive of import duties and VAT.
All invoices and payments will be in Great British Pounds (GBP).
Step 4: Lot Shipment
Memento Exclusives operates with several reputable logistics experts. Our partners have experience coordinating the worldwide shipment of valuable and delicate vehicles and collectibles and will ensure products are treated with the utmost care.
Upon conclusion of a sale our specialist will contact the winning bidder to discuss delivery options. Air and sea freight quotes can be produced for items.
