Story

“A lot of people criticize Formula 1 as an unnecessary risk. But what would life be like if we only did what is necessary?” - Niki Lauda

Epitomising speed and engineering excellence, this engine cover offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a collector. Used by McLaren’s Niki Lauda during the 1982 F1® season, this truly is one of the greatest pieces of racing memorabilia to ever land on our auction.

An Incredible Story To Be Told

Lauda remains one of the most influential personalities in F1® to this day, and one of the most iconic names to come from the sport. He started his F1® career in 1972 at March – the 70s are often recalled as the years of legends like Lauda – before moving to BRM the following season. However, it wasn’t long before Enzo Ferrari became interested in the Austrian ace. In 1974, Niki took his place at the iconic Scuderia Ferrari. Racing for the Prancing Horse team for four seasons, Lauda claimed two of his three World Championships behind the wheel of their cars. In 1975 Lauda won five races to claim the Title ahead of Emerson Fittipaldi, who was a fair way behind on points. However, Lauda is possibly most notable for his fierce rivalry with James Hunt, with the pair fighting over the 1976 title.

In 1976, Lauda overcame a serious racing incident, in which his race car caught fire. The severity of the accident left many to believe that Lauda would not make it, after he was left in a coma in hospital. Against all odds, Lauda not only survived, but returned to racing the same season – only two races missed. He lost out to the Title, but the story of the season was his incredible recovery and his sheer determination and dedication to the sport.

The 1982 season marked new beginnings for Lauda, as he joined the iconic McLaren F1® Team, following his retirement at the end of 1979. Lauda knew that McLaren sponsors wanted him to prove he was still a winner, and he did so by claiming victory at the 1982 Long Beach Grand Prix – only his third race back in an F1® car. Not only did Lauda prove he was still capable of winning races, but he showcased his desire and talent further by going on to claim a third World Championship Title in 1984, with McLaren.

Used by a Legend

You have the ultimate opportunity to own this exceptionally rare piece of memorabilia. Used by Niki Lauda during the 1982 season, this McLaren engine cover is an unparalleled piece of history. Bodywork from current race teams and drivers is hard to come by, so to be able to own this heritage engine cover is an unmissable chance. The team had a successful season in 1982, securing second place in the Constructors’ Championship with 69 points. Lauda and his teammate Watson both claimed two victories each in their MP4/1s, with Watson finishing joint second and Lauda fifth in the Drivers’ World Championship.

Showcasing the McLaren colours that they used during the 1982 season, this authentic piece of Lauda history is one of the rarest to ever land on the F1® Authentics auction.

As one of F1®’s greatest drivers, Lauda – who remained a prominent figure in the sport until his passing in 2019 – lived up to his legendary status, claiming three Championships, advocating racing safety and being a dynamic role in inspiring the younger generation of up-and-coming drivers.

Auction Buyers Guide

Our team's primary aims are to source the most unique items for our auctions and to make participating in our online events enjoyable and easy for our buyers. We endeavour to do this whilst offering a personalised service to all.

Step 1: Register to Bid

To register as a bidder, create an account on our account. You'll be asked to provide your credit card details, and a temporary charge will be placed on the account for the duration of the auction to minimise fraudulent accounts from interfering with the bidding process.

Step 2: Place Your Bid

Items at auction may be sold with or without a reserve price, and will be clearly identified as such during the auction.

For a sale to be successful a bid must equal or exceed the reserve. In the event that you are the highest final bidder, but the total bid remains under the reserve price the item will not sell.

Popcorn Bidding: All lots use a 5-minute time extension system. If a bid is placed within the final 5 minutes, the lot’s end time will extend by another 5 minutes. This can continue for up to 24 hours after the original closing time.

Items that are sold without a reserve will be clearly identified as such during the auctions. In their case the highest final bid will always win the item.

Items that do not meet reserve or do not receive any bids will not sell. Upon the closure of the auction these will be removed and managed independently by our specialists. Interested parties are invited to engage with our private sales team to make an offer.

Step 3: Make Payment

We pride ourselves in offering our customers a variety of payment options to satisfy their preferences. Upon conclusion of the auction the F1® Authentics sales platform will automatically issue a payment link to the winning bidder.

Payment is due in full by the end of the first business day following a sale. Proof of payment will be required and requested by our specialists.

Auction hammer price is exclusive of buyer's premium and sales tax, and exclusive of import duties and VAT.

All invoices and payments will be in Great British Pounds (GBP).

Step 4: Lot Shipment

Memento Exclusives operates with several reputable logistics experts. Our partners have experience coordinating the worldwide shipment of valuable and delicate vehicles and collectibles and will ensure products are treated with the utmost care.

Upon conclusion of a sale our specialist will contact the winning bidder to discuss delivery options. Air and sea freight quotes can be produced for items.
