The skid block, often referred to as the ‘plank’, is a crucial part of the F1® car’s underfloor. It was designed to regulate ride height and prevent excessive contact with the track and was first introduced to the sport in 1994. Typically made from a high-density wood laminate called Jabroc, the plank runs along the central section of the floor and serves as a wear indicator. If the wear is beyond the FIA’s legal limit, the car can be disqualified for running too low and gaining an advantage. F1® teams today carefully manage the skid block to optimise aerodynamics while staying within the regulations.
This plank once ran on the underneath of Lando Norris’ MCL38, driven at the eleventh round of the 2024 season, during the Sprint. Lando Norris had a very close fight for the win at the Red Bull Ring, Austria, with this authentic component being part of the moment.
