Vandoorne made his debut season as a full-time driver with McLaren F1 Team in the 2017 season. Performing well alongside his teammate, Alonso, Vandoorne secured 13 points despite the team being disappointed in the reliability and performance of the car. He managed to finish in the top 10 in Hungary, Malaysia and Singapore and due to his good performance on track, was retained as a driver for the 2018 season.  

Vandoorne made a good start to the 2018 season, securing 3 points finishes in the first 4 races of the season. Once again however, the performance of the car made finishing highly in the standings difficult, leaving the team with a lack of points finishes in the middle of the season. Yet again – Vandoorne proved himself to be quite the driver despite the performance difficulties of the car, entering some impressive battles on track, notably at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with Esteban Ocon and Romain Grosjean. Vandoorne finished 16th in the Drivers’ Standings after collecting 12 points across the season.
