Story
Fans of Formula 1®’s most iconic drivers and engineering milestones now have the opportunity to own a remarkable piece of motorsport history. This authentic wind tunnel model represents the Sauber C20, the very car that marked Kimi Räikkönen’s Formula 1® debut during the 2001 season.
Used during the intensive aerodynamic development programme, this model embodies the innovation and forward thinking that defined Sauber’s breakthrough campaign. With its striking form and historical importance, it stands as a true collector’s piece from a pivotal moment in modern F1®.
The Story of Sauber in Formula 1®
Sauber entered Formula 1® in 1993 following a hugely successful period in sportscar racing, particularly within the legendary Group C era. Running Ilmor Mercedes engines, the Swiss team quickly built a reputation for producing some of the most elegant and efficient cars on the grid, achieving multiple top five finishes in their debut season.
For 2001, Sauber introduced the all new C20. The philosophy behind the car was clear. Leaner, lighter and more efficient. By reducing complexity and component count, the team focused on maximising aerodynamic performance and overall balance. Development was extensive, with Sauber spending 35 weeks refining the car in the RUAG wind tunnel in Emmen, making this the final Sauber project completed at that facility before the team opened its own wind tunnel in Hinwil.
The C20 quickly proved its credentials on track. At just the third race of the season in Brazil, Nick Heidfeld delivered an outstanding third place finish, underlining the strength of the design and cementing the car’s place in Sauber history.
A Landmark Formula 1® Car
The Sauber C20 is remembered for several important milestones. Most notably, it provided the first Formula 1® drive for future World Champion Kimi Räikkönen, launching one of the sport’s most celebrated careers.
Technically, the car also broke new ground as the first Formula 1® machine to feature the innovative twin keel front suspension layout. By mounting the lower wishbones on extensions beneath the monocoque, Sauber’s engineers were able to clean up the airflow around the front of the car and reduce drag, a concept that would influence future aerodynamic thinking across the grid.
This particular wind tunnel model carries its own unique provenance, having been presented by the Sauber team to RUAG management following the completion of the C20’s aerodynamic testing programme.
Striking Artistic Finish
Adding another layer of individuality, the model’s prototype bodywork has been hand finished by Swiss artist Andreas Jordi. Using bold acrylic brushwork, Jordi transformed the aerodynamic form into a visually arresting display piece, blending technical precision with artistic expression.
This is a large-format item and does not qualify for standard shipping rates. This item is located in the United Kingdom. A custom shipping quote will be provided following a successful winning bid. Auction Buyers Guide
Our team's primary aims are to source the most unique items for our auctions and to make participating in our online events enjoyable and easy for our buyers. We endeavour to do this whilst offering a personalised service to all.
Step 1: Register to Bid
To register as a bidder, create an account on our account. You'll be asked to provide your credit card details, and a temporary charge will be placed on the account for the duration of the auction to minimise fraudulent accounts from interfering with the bidding process.
Step 2: Place Your Bid
Items at auction may be sold with or without a reserve price, and will be clearly identified as such during the auction.
For a sale to be successful a bid must equal or exceed the reserve. In the event that you are the highest final bidder, but the total bid remains under the reserve price the item will not sell.
Popcorn Bidding: All lots use a 5-minute time extension system. If a bid is placed within the final 5 minutes, the lot’s end time will extend by another 5 minutes. This can continue for up to 24 hours after the original closing time.
Items that are sold without a reserve will be clearly identified as such during the auctions. In their case the highest final bid will always win the item.
Items that do not meet reserve or do not receive any bids will not sell. Upon the closure of the auction these will be removed and managed independently by our specialists. Interested parties are invited to engage with our private sales team to make an offer.
Step 3: Make Payment
We pride ourselves in offering our customers a variety of payment options to satisfy their preferences. Upon conclusion of the auction the F1® Authentics sales platform will automatically issue a payment link to the winning bidder.
Payment is due in full by the end of the first business day following a sale. Proof of payment will be required and requested by our specialists.
Auction hammer price is exclusive of buyer's premium and sales tax, and exclusive of import duties and VAT.
All invoices and payments will be in Great British Pounds (GBP).
Step 4: Lot Shipment
Memento Exclusives operates with several reputable logistics experts. Our partners have experience coordinating the worldwide shipment of valuable and delicate vehicles and collectibles and will ensure products are treated with the utmost care.
Upon conclusion of a sale our specialist will contact the winning bidder to discuss delivery options. Air and sea freight quotes can be produced for items.
